Pulkit Singh blasted a superb 124 and Vikas Adyanthaya took his first ever five-wicket haul as Banchory 2nd XI got their Grade 3 campaign off to a flying start at Burnett Park on Saturday.

Banchory 2nd XI 257-9 (40 overs): Singh 124; Salihi 3-44
Fraserburgh 2nd XI 80 all out (19.3 overs): Niazai 37; V Adyanthaya 5-25

Banchory 2nd XI won by 177 runs

Singh attacked from the off after Banchory won the toss and elected to bat. Slashing cuts, glorious drives, elegant flicks and dismissive clubs to anything short saw the field pushed back - leaving space to rotate the strike.

After a record breaking 2nd XI opening stand of 156 between Singh and Redpath (38) contributions were made by Gopinathan (16), Burnett (12) and V Adyanthaya (12), in supporting roles to Singh, who was eventually trapped LBW by Rennie for 124. The match defining innings included 14 fours and six sixes.

For Fraserburgh the steadfast Rennie finished with 2-16, speedy opening bowler Salihi took 3-44, D Munro’s (2-31) tempting flight ensnared two Banchory batters and youngster Traves (1-40) dismissed the Banchory captain with his first ball! Niazai (0-52), Shinwari (0-34), Nasir (0-26) all stuck to the task with dedication and enthusiasm when faced with some top-class batting from Singh, and R Munro (0-3) ended the innings with an accurate over.

Opening bowlers Hart and Burnett quickly picked up a wicket apiece and hope of a run-chase for the visitors lay with Niazai (37) who, like Singh, ruthlessly punished anything short with excellent timing. V Adyanthaya would take the key wicket. Three of his first four deliveries were dispatched by Niazai to the boundary, but a flighted ball was slightly mistimed and plucked from the sky by Gopinathan at cow corner.

The final seven wickets fell for 21 runs. V Adyanthaya (5-25) added another four thanks to some smart wicket-keeping from Counsell and well-taken catches in the field. The extremely accurate Gopinathan (2-0) picked up a couple after the groundwork was laid by opening bowlers Burnett (2-38) and Hart (1-15).

Next week Banchory 2nds travel to Mineralwell Park to take on Stonehaven Thistle.
