Powerful Fraserburgh batting sees Banchory fall just short

Will Redpath4 May - 19:46

Quick fire half centuries from Gospel and Rohani saw Banchory lose their first home fixture of the season in a game that was close to being close.

Banchory 1st XI 170-9 (40 overs): D Brown 37, Colley 32; Uryakhil 3-29, Rohani 2-19

Fraserburgh 1st XI 171-6 (25.5 overs): Gospel 68*, Rohani 56; Rotheram 2-9, D Brown 2-53

Put into bat on a slippery artificial Redpath (23) and Colley (32) got Banchory off to a solid start, putting on 52 for the first wicket.

The breakthrough came after a few tight overs as Fraserburgh found their line and length after initially struggling in the wet conditions. Redpath got twitchy and mistimed a lofted drive straight to mid-on.

This triggered a traditional middle order batting collapse. First Rotheram (2), after reassuring Colley he would see off opening bowler Gospels final over, went for a big drive only to chop on.

Shakir (11) hit a couple of sweetly timed boundaries before playing around a straight one. Tripathi (1) and Hendriksen (0) completed the collapse, the latter taking an early lead in the duck award.

After a good start Banchory had fallen to 76-5. Colley, perhaps disturbed by the tumbling wickets, scored 1 run during the 10 overs of collapse. But importantly he stayed there and a 72 run partnership with D Brown (37) steadied the ship.

Brown showed his potential as an all rounder, clubbing some terrific boundaries, including the only six of the Banchory innings. At the other end Colley admirably stuck around despite requiring a runner.

The tail of S Abbott (3*), G Brown (12), and Turnbull (1*), all added valuable runs. Extras (48) just missed out on a half century, as a large number of wides helped the hosts to post a defendable 170.

The game was very much in the balance as Fraserburgh were quickly reduced to 36-3. Abbott started things off with a classic hooping inswinger to bowl The Broch skipper Gray (6). Rotheram then casually started his five over spell, which went for just nine runs, with a double wicket maiden.

But some impressive power hitting from Rohani (56) and Gospel (68*) saw momentum swing back to the visitors. The pair added 66 in just eight overs before Tripathi had Rohani dismissed, G Brown, coiled like a viper at square leg, taking a stunning diving catch.

D Brown came back into the attack and had Waseem (0) and Bassit (2) caught behind to further stall the Fraserburgh charge. At 124-6 things were again in the balance.

However, Gospel and new batter Uryakhil (26*) went on the attack. The ball was often in the air but eluded the fielders and the required 47 runs were knocked off in just 22 balls.

Next weekend the 1st XI welcome Portcullis to Burnett Park.
